The Dante Coal and Railroad Museum receives Russell
County Beautification Award. Each year the Russell County
Chamber of Commerce presents a "Beautification Award" to those
businesses and non-profit organizations who have restructured their
business by remodeling, building or just showing vast improvements which
would lend to the visual enhancement of the community. The 2007
recipients of this prestigious award are our very own museum, and
Century 21, located in Lebanon.

Former Dante resident [Baird Sutherland] presents Georgia Boy
Scout an award crafted by local resident [Roger Ring]

The Inaugural Roger Ring "Cutting Edge Award" was
presented to Boy Scout Ishmael Hayes during a recent Troop 54 Court of
Honor in Atlanta, Georgia. The award was given in recognition of Hayes'
superior leadership, enthusiasm, teamwork, and support to the troop
during 2007.
The plaque reads as follows: "This award is presented to the Outstanding
Scout of the Year in memory of Roger Ring, 25 Oct. 37 – 4 Sep. 06. For
his love of scouting program, Roger carved the attached wooden knife in
hopes that the recipient will continue with Scouting until he has
attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
Roger was a faithful member of Troop 1, Dante, VA during the 50's the
award was a collaborative effort between Baird Sutherland, Boy Scout
Coordinator for Rotary International District 6900 in Georgia, and his
good friend from childhood, Roger Ring, Ring carved the workable wooden
knife and Sutherland rendered the engraved plaque. The two grew up
together in Dante and were Boy Scouts in Troop 1 of the Lonesome Pine
Council for several years.
Roger was able to carve six knives before he passed away in September,
2006 one Boy Scout will be honored annually with this award through the
year 2012 Ring leaves a fine legacy for his widow, Mrs. Judy D Ring
Castlewood, His daughter Michelle and two sons, Lenny and Michael.
In addition to the new award Sutherland also presented Ishmael with a
copy of Alvin Townley's book (Legacy of Honor) The Townley book captures
a series of stories of America's Eagle Scouts.
Troop 54 is sponsored by the First United Methodist Church of East
Point, and will be 75 years old this Summer. |
